The Sanatorium by Sarah Pearse ~Audiobook Review~

The Sanatorium by Sarah Pearse has been all over Bookstagram since before its release. I was unsuccessful in obtaining an arc copy but I was pretty excited when I found the audiobook on Libby. I was really hoping for some eerie asylum vibes, but what I got was a mystery/thriller. Elin and her boyfriend, travel to the Swiss Alps to join her estranged brother Isaac for his engagement party. The hotel was once a sanatorium but has now undergone a remodel. Elin has a very tragic past with the loss of her brother and mother, and let’s not include the PTSD she experiences from her job as a detective. Of course, nothing bad will happen right??? An avalanche blocks all roads for the hotel and the guests are trapped, but then a dead body is discovered…then another. Police can’t reach them and Elin is the only one who can investigate the scene of a crime, but it is a lot more than she bargained for…

I am so torn. I really did enjoy the writing and the narrator, Elizabeth Knowelden really captured each character. While I do love a good mystery with a heavy dose of suspense, there was an opportunity to give a really atmospheric and eerie tale. I didn’t get chills while listening to this book, there wasn’t a moment where I was scared, but I really did enjoy the depth of the characters. I do think there was a lot happening–maybe too much. Elin has issues with her boyfriend, her brother, her work, and is dealing with her grief for her mother and brother on top of it all. Her boyfriend got on my nerves from time to time. I know he was at his wit’s end, but he was not very supportive.

When it comes to the mystery, there are so many plot twists that it will make your head spin. It is the owner, then-no wait, it is the friend, ACTUALLY, it is this person—which just ends up as a “made-you-look” situation. I could have done with one or two twists less and have a more developed ending. I am sorry, that clue that Elin discovers is a little weak. BUT the END! My god that epilogue!!!! What is happening and there is a book two right?? I was so torn between 2 or 3 stars, but then BAM, that ending has me torn between 3 or 4 stars. If there is another book to the series then that could mean that there is an explanation for all the information thrown at us. So I think I decided on 3 stars, but I will definitely read book two when it comes out! Don’t let this star rating deter you. There were some complex and suspenseful moments!
