“The ending doesn’t matter. What matters is how we get there. To face what’s ahead with as much dignity as we can muster and make the most of the time we have left.”
The Witch’s Heart
Be still, my heart. The Witch’s Heart by Genevieve Gornichec is stunning! I could have read it in a few hours but I choose to take my time with it. I never wanted it to end! Angrboda is a witch who can heal and tell the future. She has knowledge that Odin desperately wants, with her refusal, she is burnt at the stake 3 times and has her heart cut out, yet she still lives. Loki, the trickster brings her heart to her and a friendship begins. Then love. As Angrboda lives on the very edge of the realm to keep away from Odin’s eye, she makes healing balms and potions to sell and has very few visitors except for Loki and her friend Skadi. She will soon birth the children who will bring about Ragnarok but all she wants is to keep them safe.
Where to even begin with this book? The writing is beautiful and it weaves a perfect story. I love the little bit of humor in the dialogue. Angrboda is sarcastic and witty, which is the perfect match for Loki. But it is difficult to love a god. No matter how deep the love and affection is, she will never be considered first in his life. Which leads to the intense dedication to her children. She is dubbed the Mother of Monsters but she knows their hearts and she loves them enough to sacrifice herself for them.
It is utterly brilliant how the author meshed all the Norse mythology together. I loved seeing the different perspectives of the gods and how their decisions impacted the end times. I am sorry, but I could not help but picture Tom Hiddleston as Loki the entire time. All the characters are flawed and also likable-even when there is a betrayal. I won’t spoil anything but the ending left me in tears and I am so looking forward to this author’s next book! I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars!
