Tolkien Tuesday ~The Unfinished Tales: The History of Galadriel and Celeborn~

“The last writing of my father’s on the subject of Galadriel and Celeborn, and probably the last on Middle-Earth and Valinor, set down in the last month of his life…”

The Unfinished Tales

We all know Galadriel’s role in The Lord of the Rings, we also know that she was one of the last to see the light of the Two Trees in Valinor. But like the quote above, Galadriel and Celeborn’s story is one of the last Tolkien worked on, which leads to inconsistencies in the text and truly one of the Unfinished Tales.

Galadriel is described as tall with hair unmatched and is said to be like the light of the Two Trees. Feanor is said to have begged her for a tress. But we know that after Feanor’s actions, Galadriel was horrified and they had a very volatile relationship. She was the keeper of one of the Elven Rings, Nenya.

Celeborn is a Telperion prince and the grandson of Olwe-who was the King of the Teleri. The y had a daughter, Celebrian who would later marry Elrond. So that in turn makes her Arwen’s grandmother.

Together, Galadriel and Celeborn established the Noldorian. It helped that Galadriel had respect for the dwarves, which we get a glimpse of when Gimli meets Galadriel. They never took the title of King and Queen. Galadriel knew that Lorien would be a stronghold to prevent Sauron from crossing the Anduin in the war. But Sauron also knew that Galadriel would be one of his greatest enemies. So needless to say, they were a couple to behold.
